125 THOUSAND PEOPLE VISITED ZEUGMA MOSAIC MUSEUM, AMONG THE WORLD'S LARGEST MOSAIC MUSEUMS, IN 9 MONTHS. MUSEUM DIRECTOR ÖZGÜR ÇOMAK SAID THAT THE NUMBER OF VISITORS DECREASED DUE TO THE PANDEMIC AND 90 THOUSAND VISITORS CAME IN THE LAST 2 MONTHS.
Zeugma Mosaic Museum, where works that shed light on history such as the Gypsy Girl Mosaic identified with Gaziantep, the Mars Statue, fountains from the Roman Period and mosaics in villas by the Euphrates River are exhibited, welcomes its visitors.
Gaziantep Museum Director Özgür Çomak said that the number of visitors decreased due to pandemic measures until June. Stating that tours were opened with the new normalization that started as of June, Çomak stated that 90 thousand people visited the Zeugma Mosaic Museum in the last 2 months.
Explaining that 125 thousand people visited the museum in the remaining 9 months of the year, Museum Director Çomak emphasized that their target for 2022 is 500 thousand visitors and said:
“Between January and June, pandemic measures and restrictions slightly reduced these visitor numbers. We have had nearly 90 thousand visitors in the last 2 months.
The number of visitors to our museum in 9 months is 125 thousand. 90 thousand of this figure occurred in the last 2 months. We expect that the opening of schools will reduce our visitor numbers in terms of domestic tourists. It is a bit difficult to set a target for this year due to the pandemic, but we aim for 500 thousand visitors for 2022.”
Explaining that the museum contains important works and mosaics, Özgür Çomak pointed out that visitors come to see the mosaics depicting very important events from Roman and Greek mythology, especially the Gypsy Girl, and said: "We exhibit here the works found in the Birecik rescue excavation that started in the Zeugma Ancient City in 1998. It was a very important city during the Zeugma period. It was a large city with a population of 80 thousand in its period. "Here are the artifacts unearthed during the rescue excavations in this city," he said.
Those who visited the museum stated that their first stop when they came to Gaziantep was the Zeugma Mosaic Museum and that they found the exhibited works fascinating.
